Seriously Short Reminder No. 24: If you differ amongst youselves…

by Umm Muawiyah

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum.

….then refer it back to Allah and His Messenger in order to clarify what is correct.

Allah says:

“O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.” [Surah An-Nisaa (4) : 59]

Too often, we let our society, our culture, our emotions, etc dictate what is right and wrong.

However, that’s not what we are supposed to do. We need to refer back to Allah and His Messenger in order get the correct answer. That is what Allah Himself has ordered us to do.

Let me give you a small example. Many societies deem that men who cry are “sissies”. Crying is a no-no for men, especially in front of their children.

Let’s refer this belief back to the Quran and the Sunnah. What do we find?

Well, in the Quran, we find that Yaqub (alaihissalam), a Prophet of Allah, cried for years over his son. We also see that he cried in front of his children.

In the ahadeeth, we see that Abu Bakr (radiallahu anhu) wept with joy when the Prophet (salallahu alaihi wasallam) told him that they were doing hijrah together. Oh and he did it in front of his children.

If there had been anything wrong with this, Allah would have sent down a revelation prohibiting it. However, He did not which means that there’s no harm in a man crying, even if it’s in front of his own children.

This example is enough to show us that we shouldn’t live our lives according to the laws of society but rather we should live it according to the laws of Allah.
