An Introduction to the Lord of the Worlds – Day 12
6) We are not benefitting Allah with our worship rather we are only benefitting ourselves.
Some people ask: ‘Will Allah even care if we worship Him? Does He even need our prayers?”
[Note: This is not a proper way of talking about the Lord of the Worlds. I’m just quoting what they’re saying.]
This is something many of the disbelievers bring up as an excuse in order to avoid worshipping Allah. They’ll keep point out that Allah doesn’t need our worship.
I mentioned in an earlier post that Allah doesn’t need our worship. However, He has ordered us to worship Him which is why we need to obey Him.
Also, our worship benefits us, not Him.
“Behold! You are those who are called to spend in the Cause of Allah, yet among you are some who are niggardly. And whoever is niggardly, it is only at the expense of his ownself. But Allah is Rich (Free of all wants), and you (mankind) are poor. And if you turn away (from Islam and the obedience of Allah), He will exchange you for some other people, and they will not be your likes.” [Surah Muhammad (47) : 38]
[The last ayah (verse) is really something that we need to reflect in this month of Ramadan, the month of charity.]
Allah explains to us that He is Al-Ghaniyy meaning rich i.e. free of needs. He is free of need from every perspective and He is free of any kind of deficiency (as needing someone else is a type of deficiency). This shows us His Perfection and the Perfection of His Attributes.
The following hadeeth shows us just how rich and free of need He is:
[I’ve quoted the full text of this hadeeth in this post.]
Allah said: “O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm me, and you will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not increase My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not decrease My Kingdom an iota.
O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all to stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, then that would not decrease what I Possess, except what is decreased of the ocean when a needle is dipped into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I account for you, and then recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 6246]
[Ponder over this hadeeth and you’ll realise what a bunch of nobodies we all are.]
He is also not in any need of a companion, or a son, or any kind of partner in His dominion.
“They (Jews, Christians and pagans) say: “Allah has begotten a son (children).” Glory be to Him! He is Rich (Free of all wants). His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. No warrant you have for this. Do you say against Allah what you know not?” [Surah Yunus (10): 68]
He is also As-Samad (the Self-Sufficient One), which again shows us the Perfection of all His Attributes.
“Allah, As-Samad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks).” [Surah Al-Ikhlaas (112) : 2]
[Point to ponder: Think about the ayah (verse) that I’ve quoted before this and then think about which ayah comes after this one.]
This means that the entire creation is dependent on Him for all their needs, and they cannot do without Him.
[As-Samad is also supposed to mean the one without any ‘holes’ or any cavity which means He does not need to eat, drink or procreate.]
So, when we realise all of the above, we’ll see that we are in need of Allah, and in need of worshipping Him.
This is a lesson for all of us especially those who skip their main acts of worship like prayer.
PS. Okay, so I said that this post was going to be “significantly” longer than the last – and it wasn’t. Due to lack of time, I’ll just try to keep the posts at this length. If you are interested, we can continue on with this series after Ramadan as well, insha-Allah.
