An Introduction to the Lord of the Worlds – Day 20

by Umm Muawiyah

Assalamu Alaikum.

[Here’s Day 19.]

3. He is Al-Qareeb (the One who is close) and Al-Mujeeb (the One who responds/answers).

“And to Thamud (people, We sent) their brother Saleh. He said: “O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other Ilah (God) but Him. He brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein, then ask forgiveness of Him and turn to Him in repentance. Certainly, my Lord is Near (to all by His Knowledge), Responsive.”” [Surah Hud (11) : 61]

“And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.” [Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 186]

[This ayah (verse) comes right after the ayah about Ramadan being the month of Quran. The ayah after this also relates to fasting and Ramadan. Something to think about, isn’t it?]

“And your Lord said: “Invoke Me, I will respond to your (invocation). Verily! Those who scorn My worship [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not believe in My Oneness, (Islamic Monotheism)] they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!”” [Surah Ghafir (40) : 60]

There are two types of closeness: general and specific

a) The general closeness means that Allah is close to His creation with regards to His Knowledge, His Hearing, His seeing, etc. He encompasses His creation in all these things.

This type of closeness pertains to everyone whether he is a believer or a disbeliever.

Note: Allah being “close” to us does not mean that He is everywhere, rather He is above His Throne, as many ayaat (verses) and ahaadeeth show.

“Have you not seen that Allah knows whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth? There is no Najwa (secret counsel) of three, but He is their fourth (with His Knowledge, while He Himself is over the Throne, over the seventh heaven), nor of five but He is their sixth (with His Knowledge), not of less than that or more, but He is with them (with His Knowledge) wheresoever they may be; and afterwards on the Day of Resurrection, He will inform them of what they did. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.” [Surah Al-Mujadilah (58):7]

Notice that this ayah (verse) begins and ends with a reference to Allah’s knowledge, so this is how He is with us all i.e. with His Knowledge.

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen (rahimahullah) stated in his explanation of Al-Wasitiyyah that the early scholars said that the meaning of “He (Allah) is with you” is:

“He knows about you, hears your words, sees your deeds, has power over you, He judges among you, etc”

b) The specific closeness is only for the righteous ones and it means that Allah is close in terms of aid and support.

In the Quran, this type has been mentioned with regards to certain types of people or with certain people:

The good-doers are one of the types of people who have this closeness:

“Truly, Allah is with those who fear Him (keep their duty unto Him), and those who are Muhsinoon (good-doers).” [Surah An-Nahl (16) : 128]

Musa and Haroon (alaihissalam) are specific people who had this type of closeness:

“He (Allah) said: “Fear not, verily! I am with you both, hearing and seeing.” [Surah Ta-Ha (20) : 46]

How does one get this type of closeness to Allah?

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu): The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Allah says: ‘I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.'” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume No. 9, Hadeeth No. 502]

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu): Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Allah said, ‘I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a friend of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge) and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume No. 8, Hadeeth No. 509]

[Note: This is the month where it’s easy to do extra worship. So if we feel lazy, let’s just remember the rewards waiting for us, one of which is being a wali (close friend) of Allah!]

Notice this part “and if he asks Me, I will give him“? That’s one of the consequences of being close to Allah, Al-Mujeeb (the One who responds).

Like closeness, there are two types of response: general and specific.

[If you’ve been following this series, you’d have noticed that most attributes mentioned have a general meaning and a specific meaning. Something to think about.]

a) The general type refers to the fact that He responds to all those who ask Him.

“And your Lord said: “Invoke Me, I will respond to your (invocation).”” [Surah Ghafir (40) : 60]

b) The specific type refers to the fact that He responds to the believers and also to those in extreme distress who have given up all hope of being answered by creation.

“Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him” [Surah An-Naml (27) : 62]

Both Al-Qareeb and Al-Mujeeb have been mentioned together (in the ayaat at the beginning of this post). And it’s easy to see why.

Al-Qareeb has also been mentioned with As-Samee (the All-Hearer):

“Say: “If (even) I go astray, I shall stray only to my own loss. But if I remain guided, it is because of the Inspiration of my Lord to me. Truly, He is All-Hearer, Ever Near (to all things).”” [Surah Saba (34) : 50]

“He (Allah) said: “Fear not, verily! I am with you both, hearing and seeing.” [Surah Ta-Ha (20) : 46]

Narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ashari (radiallahu anhu): When Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) fought the battle of Khaibar, or when Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) went towards it, (whenever) the people, (passed over a high place overlooking a valley, they raised their voices saying, “Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! (Allah is Greater) None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.” On that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said (to them), “Lower your voices, for you are not calling a deaf or an absent one, but you are calling a Hearer Who is near and is with you.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume No. 5, Hadeeth No. 516]

Subhan Allah, if we are believers, He hears our calls, He is close to us and He responds to us.

What more could any person want?

These Names should increase us in tawakkul (reliance upon Allah) and cause us to be more attached to Him and less attached to the creation.

As someone, may Allah reward her, pointed out to me: Relying upon the Creator brings peace whereas relying upon people causes stress!

4. Allah, As-Samee, Al-Mujeeb, Al Qareeb has ordered us to supplicate to Him alone.

An-Numan ibn Bashir (radiallahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (salallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Dua is ibaadah.” Then he recited:

“And your Lord said: “Invoke Me, I will respond to your (invocation). Verily! Those who scorn My worship they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!”” [Surah Ghafir (40) : 60]
[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3372. Graded ‘sahih’ by Al-Albani in Sahih Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3372.]

“And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them.” [Surah Al-Araaf (7) : 180]

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu): Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: “Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume No. 2, Hadeeth No. 246]

Many people don’t realise the ultimate reason for doing dua. It is to show our total submission, subservience, reliance and  utter dependence on Allah. When they realise this fact, they will also realise that dua is not just done to get what you want when you want it. [I’ll explain this in more detail in the next part, insha-Allah.]

5. He loves that we ask Him.

Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Indeed, he who does not ask Allah, He becomes angry with him.” [Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3373. Graded ‘hasan’ by Al-Albani in Sahih Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3373.]

6. Al-Mujeeb is always giving.

“Whosoever is in the heavens and on earth begs of Him (its needs from Him). Every day He has a matter to bring forth (such as giving honour to some, disgrace to some, life to some, death to some, etc.)!” [Surah Ar-Rahman (55) : 29]

It was narrated from Abu Saeed Al-Khudri (radiallahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “There is no Muslim who does not offer any dua in which there is no sin or severing of family ties but Allah will give him one of three things in return: either He will answer his dua sooner, or He will store it up for him in the Hereafter, or He will divert an equivalent evil away from him because of it.” They said: “What if we should increase (in it)?” He said: “(With) Allah is more.” [Sahih At-Targhib wat-Tarhib, Hadeeth No. 1633]

Remind me again, why is it that we don’t ask Allah for each and every little thing? Why is that we only remember Him during periods of hardship? We have absolutely nothing to lose by asking Him. On the contrary, we have everything to gain.

Remember: Constantly asking creation leads to humiliation. Constantly asking Allah leads to dignity and honour.

Think about it.

7. Allah has prohibited us from supplicating to others.

“And the mosques are for Allah (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allah.” [Surah Al-Jinn (72) : 18]

“Say (O Muhammad): “I invoke only my Lord (Allah Alone), and I associate none as partners along with Him.” [Surah Al-Jinn (72) : 20]

“And invoke not besides Allah, any that will neither profit you, nor hurt you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one of the dhalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers). And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He will. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Surah Yunus (10) : 106-107]

“That is because Allah He is the Truth (the only True God of all that exists, Who has no partners or rivals with Him), and what they (the polytheists) invoke besides Him, it is Baatil (falsehood) And verily, Allah He is the Most High, the Most Great.” [Surah Al-Hajj (22) : 62]

This is one of the main types of shirk (ascribing partners to Allah) in worship i.e. shirk in dua (supplication).

8. It doesn’t make sense to supplicate to other than Allah.

There are actually people on this planet who supplicate to idols and dead people (usually the Prophets (alaihimissalam) and other righteous people).

a) When they are in trouble, they call upon Allah so why do they change the format when they are not in trouble??

“And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allah, making their Faith pure for Him only, but when He brings them safely to land, behold, they give a share of their worship to others.” [Surah Al-Ankabut (29) : 65]

b) Allah responds to the distressed ones, so why don’t people take advantage of this offer?

“Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations. Is there any ilah (god) with Allah? Little is that you remember!” [Surah An-Naml (27) : 62]

c) Unlike As-Samee (the All-Hearer), the idols and dead people cannot hear*. Even if they could hear, what can they do to help us?? Unlike Al-Mujeeb (the One who responds), they do not respond.

[There is a difference of opinion about the dead being able to hear. Even if we assume that they do, the second part of the above statement still applies.]

“And Allah judges with truth, while those to whom they invoke besides Him, cannot judge anything. Certainly, Allah! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.” [Surah Ghafir (40) : 20]

“When he (Ibrahim) said to his father: “O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything?” [Surah Maryam (19) : 42]

“Verily, those whom you call upon besides Allah are slaves like you. So call upon them and let them answer you if you are truthful. Have they feet wherewith they walk? Or have they hands wherewith they hold? Or have they eyes wherewith they see? Or have they ears wherewith they hear? Say (O Muhammad): “Call your (so-called) partners (of Allah) and then plot against me, and give me no respite!” [Surah Al-Araaf (7) : 194-195]

“Say (O Muhammad to these pagans): “Think! All that you invoke besides Allah show me! What have they created of the earth? Or have they a share in (the creation of) the heavens? Bring me a Book (revealed before this), or some trace of knowledge (in support of your claims), if you are truthful!” And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping.” [Surah Al-Ahqaf (46) : 4-6]

“Say: (O Muhammad to those polytheists, pagans, etc.) “Call upon those whom you assert (to be associate gods) besides Allah, they possess not even the weight of an atom (or a small ant), either in the heavens or on the earth, nor have they any share in either, nor there is for Him any supporter from among them.”” [Surah Saba (34) : 22]

“O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! Those on whom you call besides Allah, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatched away a thing from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought. They have not estimated Allah His Rightful Estimate; Verily, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty.” [Surah Al-Hajj (22) : 73-74]

“He merges the night into the day (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the night are added to the hours of the day), and He merges the day into the night (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the day are added to the hours of the night). And He has subjected the sun and the moon, each runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmeer (the thin membrane over the date stone). If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything).” [Surah Fatir (35) : 13-14]

Some people call upon Isa (alaihissalam) and the angels. However, it still doesn’t matter because they cannot help anyone of their own accord!

“Say (O Muhammad): “Call unto those besides Him whom you pretend [to be gods like angels, Isa, Uzair, etc.]. They have neither the power to remove the adversity from you nor even to shift it from you to another person.” Those whom they call upon [like Isa   son of Maryam, Uzair, angels, etc.] desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (Allah), as to which of them should be the nearest and they [Isa, Uzair, angels, etc.] hope for His Mercy and fear His Torment. Verily, the Torment of your Lord is something to be afraid of!” [Surah Al-Israa (17) : 56-57]

Someone mig‌ht ask: “Why should we know about this? We only call upon Allah!”

I’ll answer this question in the next part, insha-Allah.

To be continued…

PS. If you have any questions related to dua, then please ask them now so that I can try to address them in the next part, insha-Allah. You can also critique the series if you wish.

    Walaikum assalaam.
Jazakillahu khayran. I’m totally loving this series alhamdulillah.
I just noticed one small thing.
At the beginning of the post the sentence ” This ayah is mentioned right after the ayah of Ramadan…” is mentioned immediately after the ayah
و قال ربكم ادعوني أستجب لكم ….instead of being mentioned after the ayah before it.
Just wanted to point that out.
    Barak Allahu feeki
